I absolutely loved this book. It is about a woman who wakes up every morning not remembering who she is. She has a form of amnesia where she can’t remember the day before. The twist and turns of this book kept me reading late into the night. This is a must read.
The Paris Wife
I finally decided that I want this blog to be about the books I read. I know there are millions of blogs out there about books but I am just adding one more. The first book that I want to add to this blog is “The Paris Wife” by Paula McLain. I loved, loved, loved this book. It is about Ernest Hemingway’s first wife. Let me just stop and say here that this is not normally a book that I would choose but something intrigued me about this book. With that being said, I couldn’t put it down. I have to admit that I ended up not liking either of the main characters but loved the story line. With that being said, I would highly recommend this book.
Teamwork
When I started school online, I really didn’t know what to expect or if I was even ready for an online community of education. In taking the Readiness Assessments, I found I was a little surprised to find out that I seem to be ready for this thing.
There are definitely some skills and characteristics that I need to work on to make them stronger. But most of the skills, I was shocked to see, I seem to be doing in my everyday life anyway. There are a couple of areas that I feel I am better in than others. They are time management and organization. I have these skills because I have 5 children who are very involved in a lot of activities. I use these two things in my everyday life with meal planning, scheduling, and just running my household in general. In saying this, I also had to take the time to think about working in a team. This is one of the things that has worried me the most about SLIS. When I started to reflect on how I had worked on a team in the past, several things came to mind. I have worked on things like PTO, school music groups, coordinating room mothers at our school, School Improvement Council, and sports teams. I also begin to think about how much I enjoyed this work and it really doesn’t seem that scary anymore. If I can take into consideration some of the tips for success that were shared in Unit 5, I feel I can be a very successful team member. Some of the strategies that were shared that I find will be helpful will be using a calendar and having a specific time to get online and work on school stuff. I have already began to organize my computer in a way that will help me keep things in folders and files that keep me a little more organized.
In thinking back about working with the teams that I have worked with in the past, I found Dr. Haycock’s four stages of team development would have helped me. I think a lot of times I have been on a team where we were stuck in the “storming” phase and never moved past it. This tells me that our team was probably not very successful even though we moved forward and made a decision and completed our project. In the future, I think knowing and thinking on these stages of development will help me. Another thing that stuck with me about Dr. Haycock’s presentation was his emphasis on how important it is is to set ground rules from the beginning and clearly define the consequences. This would have also been beneficial for me as a team member.
Enid Irwin’s presentation gave me some insight into why SLIS has students work in teams and the benefit of that work. In the business world in real life situations we work in groups and on teams. Ms. Irwin said something that made me think more about the benefits of working on a team. The practical projects at SLIS are set up to be very job oriented. This will give us the experience we need to step from the classroom to the job and be ready to work on a team.
This unit has helped me transition from operating as an individual to operating as a team member. I hope that I can use the many tips and strategies learned in this unit to help me function as a better part of this educational community.
A New Adventure
Starting graduate school has been in the back of my mind for a long time. So now here I am. I am actually doing it. Why did I choose Library Science? I have loved to read since I could read. My head has always been stuck in a book. Nothing has changed for me. When people tell me,”I don’t have time to read”. I laugh. I have 5 kids. If anyone doesn’t have time for books, it should be me. It is a priority. I read everyday. I finish lots of books every month. So many it is hard to keep up with them. My kids are already showing a great love for books. As I walk up the stairs at night, I hear reading lights clicking off. They were supposed to be asleep 2 hours ago, yet, they are reading and do not want to get caught. Secretly, I think it is awesome. I remember those days of reading with a flashlight and throwing the book under the bed when I heard a parent coming down the hall. I hope my love for reading can be carried through to many more children in the future (not just my own). I can’t wait to begin this new adventure.
